How to Reach

Fly into Srinagar International Airport (SXR). From Srinagar, Pahalgam is a 90 km drive taking about 2.5 to 3 hours. You can hire a private taxi (approx INR 2500-3500) from the airport or Srinagar TRC. For budget travelers, take a shared Sumo from Srinagar to Anantnag, and another from Anantnag to Pahalgam.

FAQs

Is Baisaran (Mini Switzerland) worth the pony ride?
Honestly, no. The ponies are overworked, the trail gets muddy with dung, and the touts overcharge. If you are reasonably fit, it's a beautiful 1.5 to 2-hour hike through pine forests. Walk it.
Will my prepaid SIM work in Pahalgam?
No. Only postpaid SIM cards (Jio, Airtel, BSNL) work in Jammu & Kashmir. If you have a prepaid SIM from outside J&K, it will be dead the moment you land.
Can I use my self-drive rental car for local sightseeing in Pahalgam?
No. The local taxi union is extremely strict. You can drive to your hotel, but to visit Aru, Betaab, or Chandanwari, you must hire a yellow local union cab from the Pahalgam taxi stand.
How many days are enough for Pahalgam?
Do not do a day trip from Srinagar; you'll spend 6 hours just driving. Stay at least 2 nights to properly see Aru Valley, Betaab Valley, and do a short hike.
Is Pahalgam safe for tourists?
Yes, very safe. Locals are incredibly hospitable, and tourism is their main livelihood. There is a heavy army and CRPF presence everywhere, which is standard for Kashmir.
Is Pahalgam better than Gulmarg?
They are different. Gulmarg is a high-altitude bowl famous for the Gondola and skiing. Pahalgam is a vast valley with rivers, dense forests, and is better for hiking, camping, and slow travel.
Can we buy alcohol in Pahalgam?
No. There are no liquor shops in Pahalgam, and drinking openly is culturally unacceptable. If you want a drink, buy it in Srinagar, bring it with you, and consume it discreetly in your hotel room.
Do I need warm clothes in summer?
Yes. Even in June or July, the evenings get chilly, especially if it rains. Always pack a good fleece or a light jacket.
