How to Reach
Option 1: Fly from India to Kathmandu (Nepal), then take a direct flight to Lhasa Gonggar Airport. Option 2: Fly from India to mainland China (Chengdu, Beijing, or Guangzhou), then take a domestic flight to Lhasa or the incredibly scenic 40-hour Qinghai-Tibet Railway. Note: Your tour guide must physically mail your Tibet Travel Permit to your hotel in mainland China before you can board a flight/train to Tibet.
FAQs
Can I backpack Tibet independently to save money?
Absolutely not. It is illegal for foreign passport holders to travel in Tibet without a registered tour guide, an assigned vehicle, and a Tibet Travel Permit. You must book a tour.
How hard is it to get the Tibet Travel Permit for Indians?
For standard tourism (Lhasa, Everest Base Camp), your tour agency handles it and it's quite straightforward. However, if you want to visit Mount Kailash for pilgrimage, Indian passport holders must apply through the Foreign Affairs Office of TAR or authorized Indian government channels, which is a much stricter, longer, and more expensive process.
Is Diamox necessary?
For most people arriving in Lhasa (3,650m), yes. Consult your doctor in India before leaving, and start taking it a day before you arrive. Do not underestimate the altitude.
Is vegetarian food easily available?
Yes, but it gets repetitive outside Lhasa. You will mostly rely on Chinese-style stir-fried vegetables, rice, noodles, and Tibetan veg momos. Bring snacks like khakhra, thepla, or dry fruits from home.
Can I fly directly from Delhi to Lhasa?
No. You must either fly to Kathmandu (Nepal) and take a direct flight to Lhasa, or fly into mainland China (like Chengdu or Beijing) and take a flight or the Qinghai-Tibet train from there.
Are the toilets really that bad?
In Lhasa and nice hotels, toilets are western and clean. On the highways and in remote areas, they are often filthy, doorless squat pits. Carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer everywhere.
Is it safe for women travelers?
From a crime perspective, Tibet is incredibly safe. State surveillance is everywhere, and violent crime against tourists is virtually unheard of.
Will my Indian SIM or internet work?
Indian SIMs on international roaming might work for calls, but data is subject to the Great Firewall of China. WhatsApp, Instagram, Google, and YouTube are blocked. Buy a reliable eSIM (like Airalo) or a premium VPN before you enter.
