How to Reach

Reaching Ho Chi Minh City from India is incredibly easy and budget-friendly. Direct flights operate from major hubs like Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and Kochi, primarily via VietJet Air and Vietnam Airlines. The flight duration is roughly 4.5 to 5.5 hours. If booked a few months in advance, round-trip tickets can cost anywhere between ₹12,000 to ₹20,000. You will land at Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN), which is located right inside the city. The easiest way for a group to reach District 1 from the airport is to book a 7-seater via the Grab app, which takes about 30-45 minutes depending on traffic and costs around ₹400-₹600 total.

FAQs

Do Indians need a visa for Vietnam?
Yes, but it's very easy. You can apply for an E-Visa online, which costs about $25 USD and takes 3-5 working days to process.
Should I carry INR to exchange in Vietnam?
No, INR is rarely accepted and gets terrible exchange rates. Carry USD to exchange at gold shops in HCMC, or use a zero-forex markup card at ATMs.
Is Ho Chi Minh City safe at night?
Generally, yes. Violent crime is extremely rare. However, petty theft like phone snatching by guys on bikes is very common. Keep your wits about you.
Will I survive as a pure vegetarian?
Yes. There are plenty of Indian restaurants in District 1. For local food, look for places marked 'Quan Chay' (Buddhist vegetarian) to avoid hidden fish sauce.
How many days are enough for HCMC?
3 to 4 days is perfect. This gives you enough time for a city tour, a day trip to the Mekong Delta, and a half-day at the Cu Chi Tunnels.
Is it better to use taxis or Grab?
Always use Grab (the local Uber). Street taxis, especially unbranded ones, are notorious for rigged meters and scamming tourists.
Do I need to be fit to visit the Cu Chi Tunnels?
To walk around the site, no. But to actually crawl inside the tunnels, you need decent mobility and must not be claustrophobic. You can skip the crawling part if you wish.
Where should we book our hotel?
District 1 is the best area for tourists. It's walkable, packed with food, and close to major sights and nightlife.
Can I drink the tap water?
Absolutely not. Stick to bottled water. Ice in reputed restaurants and cafes is generally safe as it's factory-made.
